TREATEMENT OF OPPOSITION
The opposition of Mao Zedong could be divided in two categories. External and internal enemies. The Japanese who invaded China and western imperialist could be classified as external enemies of Mao Zedong. The struggle against these international enemies brought together the nationalists and the communists in a common cause to liberate China from its foreign occupiers. But the first popular front ended when the nationalists attacked the communists and the Shanghai massacres and their national party wanted to purge or eliminate all of the communists. The struggle against the internal enemies, capitalists and counter revolutionaries, begins when Mao and the communists need to fight for their lives. The long march illustrates this struggle to keep the movement alive. The fact that they survived means that they have the warfare techniques and the increased propaganda support of the people to fight against this powerful internal enemy. This civil war is put aside for a period of time when the Japanese invade northern China. The second popular front of the communists and the nationalists developed, but also ends with the defeat of the Japanese in 1945. So the war against the internal enemies begins again and this time
the communists are much better prepared to win that fight. So once the nationalists are eliminated the internal enemy is eliminated and Mao and the communists have to start eliminating political enemies. The first agrarian law is a good example of how capitalist landowners became enemies of the communist state and a lot of them were humiliated and even executed in the first years of the Chinese state. After this, Mao moved against political enemies. The cultural revolution is a good example of members of the communist party who are seen as internal enemies of the Chinese people, more specifically Mao’s leadership. Using the civil war against the nationalists as internal opponents and using the japanese and the western imperialists as external enemies you could see that Mao successfully eliminated all of his opponents by 1965.
