Why do societies adopt dictatorships and single-party states?
Societies don't just sign up to have all their freedom lost and "adopt" dictatorships as a whole. Throughout history, especially circa the 1950s, the root of totalitarian societies sprung from communities going through crisis events, ranging from a corrupt government to war. During those periods of severe frustration, loss, and chaos are citizens of crisis cities most vulnerable and accepting of a change in goverment, hence the reason that they are targetted by totalitarian leaders. Those leaders achieve the trust of civilians through personality cult; the use of propoganda and speeches emitting pathos begins to decrease the opposing party's ability to impact the nation and its citizens. Aims to pursue a better future for the nation is promised. Radical ideas are imposed for the betterment of the people and the citizens agree because they have nothing to lose. Sooner or later, the totalitarian leader is idiolized by a majority of the population and now the aim is to capture control of the entire nation through the influence of the media, the arts, education, and by eliminating the opposing parties completely.
